[Engine] Timing Belt Change

I've just had the timing belt changed on my Berlingo and while the van drives and starts ok there is a distinct louder engine noise. Has anyone experienced the same thing?

Hi Imc500,

I had my second belt change about 17K ago, first one was done at 60K under warranty when the water pump was excessively noisy. Done the next belt at almost 160K and with this one I have noticed a distinct engine note change around 2000rpm. Car drives fine and ticks over fine no issues at all but driving the car so much i could hear the difference.

I put it in to the garage and asked them to double check everything and the came back to say everything looks fine and everything is operating as expected. I am putting it down to change of parts as all parts must have very slight differences and this must filter through to different noises. There is no wizzing or whirring hinting at a bearing etc just more engine noise around the 2000rpm if it drops below this it is not noticable and above this it sound the same as it always has done.

Not much help i am afraid but it is something i am experiencing but no know fault or explanation for it can be found.

I had my M49's cambelt changed a couple of years ago, and when I picked it up from the garage it sounded to me like a bag of spanners - incredibly rough and noisy. The garage owner took it for a test drive with me, and he thought it sounded OK but did comment that the car was accelerating quite briskly, so he thought the timing might have been slightly advanced.  I left it with them for a couple of days and they adjusted it, and when I picked it up the second time it was much quieter (though they still said that they thought it was OK before).

Yes, mine was done first a month ago and it was smooth up to 2000 rpm then got distinctly noisier after that. When I took it back they noticed the belt was a bit loose so after tightening it the motor now sounds like a bag of nails.

I thought it wasn't possible to adjust the timing as the sprockets can only line up one way.

I don't know as I've not done it myself, but the garage said they adjusted it, and it certainly was quieter afterwards.

I fitted the belt too tight on ours before. It made a loud humming noise
.
There are 3 bolts through the camshaft pulley in slotted holes which are supposed to be slackened when the new belt is fitted while everything is locked so it is all timed up correctly

The garage adjusted the belt tension and the engine now runs smoothly as before.
